Institute Bookplates

As the number of different bookplates found in the surviving books of the Launceston Mechanics' Institute continues to grow, we have established a Flickr photostream to showcase the variety of designs and illustrate the way these bookplates were used to record changes in accessioning practice and library classification schemes.

An album of twenty eight of the bookplates used by the Institute between 1842 and 1929 has been added to Flickr at:
The album includes printed plates, stamps, and the plates of previous book owners such as the Circulating Library of Ferdinand Riva, a Launceston jeweller and gold merchant who operated a subscription library from his Charles Street shop until 1852.
